Turning AI into a real pattern: Bobble heart granny square

Pinterest is full of AI. Let’s put humans back into it.

After sharing a pattern tutorial on TikTok, one follower asked for a tutorial on this square:

I encouraged her to look for a tutorial from the original designer and also looked for the designer myself in hopes of pointing her in the right direction. But the follower said the pattern wasn’t attached to any pattern, and I couldn’t find an “Orgubahcemm” on Pinterest. Then, I zoomed in on the photo and saw this:

It’s blurry and filled with weird little bumps and loose threads that made me realize this is just another AI photo. I can’t tell you how many complaints I see on fiber art photos that express frustration with this kind of AI garbage that doesn’t provide any pattern.

With that in mind, I created a new pattern for her — and you, dear reader.

The Popcorn Stitch Pattern

The square is made using single crochet and bobble stitches. I made my sampler with this skinny chenille yarn. (I wasn’t paid to run that link — it’s just literally what I used.) The square took up a little less than half the skein, so roughly 200 yards.

The square starts with 46 starting chains, followed by a sc first row, then a border of alternating bobble and sc stitches. Each row starts and ends with a sc. To get the borders with bobble bobbles that somewhat alternate, when you get to the second row of popcorn stitches, you will add an extra sc to move it one over. The heart, however, is made up of neatly stacked bobbles (all columns of bobbles align, as do the columns of sc).
