What is the story behind the name “Bellwether”?
In a flock, the bellwether is the sheep who leads the others, traditionally wearing a bell to signal the way. For me, Bellwether Craft Co. is about leading back to intentional making, whatever that looks like to you.
How does history influence your crochet patterns?
I believe that fiber connects us to our ancestors from all around the world. Crochet isn’t just a hobby; it’s a way to weave our own intentions and heritage into a physical, lasting legacy.
What’s your stance on synthetic fiber?
Conflicted. The harsh reality is that synthetic fiber has decimated the agricultural industry of natural fiber producers while polluting our planet and our bodies with microplastics. But the other harsh reality is that it’s not feasible for most crafters to commit to purchasing 100% natural fiber, and we craft to feed our souls and nurture our mental health. So I’m not about to get snobby if someone needs to spend $4 on a skein instead of $20 to make a blanket. I am in the same boat. But can you drive some measure of demand for natural fiber? Maybe we can’t make blankets with 100% merino wool, but what about hats? If every crafter committed a portion of their craft budget — however, small — to supporting the natural fiber industry, we could begin to see a resurgence of natural, ethical wool.

About Me
Hi! I’m Aly, the crocheter and designer behind Bellwether Craft Co. I have loved arts and crafts since I was a small child, but once I was old enough to use knitting needles and crochet hooks or tie macrame knots, it was the fiber arts that truly stole my heart. Creating something that I could wear or use in my home inspired me to continue learning and practicing. It has also inspired me to learn more about sustainability and natural fibers.
