This beanie incorporates berry stitches, half double crochet, and a Celtic weave band for a lovely textured look. It’s for the intermediate crowd, but, newbies, don’t shy away! The pattern is complete with photos, symbol charts and video tutorials.

I designed this beanie while snuggling with my little black/calico rescue kitty named Shadow, who provided creative direction. Whenever I sit down in the evening and get out my latest crochet project, Shadow darts across the room to sit in my lap and ultimately on my project. I’m making a blanket for a friend. Shadow thinks it’s hers.

Shadow was a stray in our neighborhood and extremely underweight before we adopted her. Bullies in the cat colony had driven her away from the feeding/watering hole at the cat lady’s house. (Just so we’re clear, I’m not one to use the term “cat lady” pejoratively.)

My daughter won her over with food and affection, and we built a house for her on our porch to keep her warm during the bitter California winters (40 degrees but with wind chill from the ocean, ok!).

Once Halloween rolled around, however, I insisted we bring her in “for the night” to keep her safe. And that translated into “she lives here forever now.”

Shadow is often supported by her assistant, Runt, who admittedly has less creative input with regard to crochet designs but is equally snuggly.

In the photo above with Shadow and Runt, you can see I’m making the hat with blue and white. The patterns also helps you identify when to change colors if you so desire.
